Title: IMPACT OF MATERNAL NITRIC OXIDE ON FEMALE GAMETOPHYTE DEVELOPMENT. On the cover: Nitric oxide (NO), a gaseous free radical, is induced in plants by various adverse environmental conditions. It plays a vital role in plant growth and development, and also in responding to environmental stresses. Wang et al. (pp 2201) demonstrate that maternal NO homeostasis significantly influences female gametophyte development. Excessive NO impedes maternal auxin delivery to the female gametophyte, delaying nucellus degeneration and female gametophyte development. This enables the maternal plant to modulate offspring production by adjusting NO homeostasis and auxin delivery, as observed in the mutant hot5 (gsnor l) or with exogenous NO. These findings reveal how plants adjust offspring numbers in response to environmental stresses. The cover art showcases the phenotypes of wild type and hot5 mutant ovules and inner female gametophytes. Image credit: Shengbao Xu.
