Doctor Who: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Verne Gay Newsday Fun, lively, imaginative — with a whiff of Disneyfication. Rated: 3/4 May 22, 2024 Full Review Doctor Who: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Hugo Rifkind Times (UK) Gatwa is magnetically watchable and not technically gay as a sexless alien, but also, come on. His chemistry with Gibson works, if anything, a little too well. May 17, 2024 Full Review Doctor Who: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Wenlei Ma The Nightly (AU) Ncuti Gatwa’s full radiance and considerable charisma is on display in every scene. May 15, 2024 Full Review Doctor Who: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Pat Stacey Irish Independent If the episodes are mostly forgettable, Gatwa, the first black Doctor and the first openly queer actor to take on the role... is the opposite. May 30, 2024 Full Review Doctor Who: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Erin Maxwell LA Weekly/Village Voice The newest Doctor assures an injection of much-needed vigor, as these episodes promise to be more vivacious and slightly more demented than previous outings, with far more to say about the state of the world, without blatantly stating it. May 19, 2024 Full Review Doctor Who: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Eddie Harrison film-authority.com …the lack of any real suspense, tension or danger feels like a major problem…smug guys explaining the universe to silly girls doesn’t cut it anymore… Rated: 2/5 May 16, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

William H A few ok episodes but the whole thing decends into a mess. Gatwa is alright but fails to ever really feel like The Doctor. Rated 1.5/5 Stars • Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 06/23/24 Full Review Stevew H I've been watching Doctor Who for over 40 years. I'm certainly not going to let anybody else's opinions say mine. Russell T. Davies has really brought Doctor Who back in fun way and Gatwa is amazing as the Doctor. Love it and I can hardly wait to see more. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/23/24 Full Review Steve S Doctor Who is BACK! Ncuti Gatwa is brilliant as the Doctor and it's a real loss for you if you let factors like race and gender identity get in the way of your enjoying the show. Give it a chance, you'll be pleasantly surprised; it's not at all what people are saying it is, people, who, despite not even watching, are posting negative reviews en masse. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/23/24 Full Review Tom S Absolutely fantastic! Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/23/24 Full Review Nathan L I think many others here let politics cloud their judgement a little too much. Politics aside, I think this season was great! It demonstrates a clear return to form off the heels of what I consider to be the worst era of "New Who" ever. The writing stumbled at certain points throughout the season. And I can't even pin point any particular episodes as examples because it is littered throughout the entire season. There were some aspects of the writing in this show where things just didn't jive right. I think 73 Yards demonstrates my main gripes with some of the writing in this show. Sometimes things happen which serve to push the plot forward but that just don't make sense or are totally pointless. 73 Yards was enjoyable, but was ultimately pointless in its execution and importance to the grander story. Also, I said I was going to put politics aside, but I have to add that the presence of certain bits of political commentary in this show did sort of bring this season down for me. Not even that those themes were included at all, but that they were so...so...SO obvious and on-the-nose. Like in the episode where the doctor starts going in on religion. Yikes. If I were watching this season with my very religious family I would probably skip that one. And that's a shame because otherwise that's my favorite episode of the season! Just saying, show us some cool adventures and tell some good stories. There's no need to bring the hammer down so hard on political issues. And if I might provide one more criticism, I would say this. If there's a "silly-o-meter" for this show, dial that back like 15%. I understand that Doctor Who is inherently a little silly, but I think previous seasons of Doctor Who struck that balance between silly and serious a lot better. A minor criticism, but a criticism nonetheless.Overall, I liked Ncuti as the doctor, and Ruby Sunday was a great companion! For the first time in a long time I am excited to see where this show goes next! Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/23/24 Full Review Nicki R I think generally that series is a decent watch. The addition of the budget has made for a more captivating experience in places, but also feel like it's been a bit of style over sustance in other places. The beggining of the series starts out fun, but in absence of much story. Second episode the villian was great, but just the episode felt thready and the use of the beatles felt surpfluous which was a shame when Doctor Who has done these historical figure episodes amazingly in the past, and didn't care really for the cheesy dance number at the end - not sure it felt earnt. Dot and Bubble felt a particular highlight to the season and felt fresh. The first parter of the finale was exciting, however the second part felt a real mess - there seemed to be no consistency to the threat (It felt hard to track how/why the villian was killing people; through the dust across time, but then through memory, but then had powers to see through Mel's eyes - everyhting just suddenly felt convenient, constantly changing just to make each scene work without any consistency). But I still am not sure why the villian was so obsessed/unable to kill Ruby's mother. The idea of her being a nobody, but has it's own legend created around it - was nice in principle, but didn't really feel how it was weaved/connected to the story or how it connected to the issues of not being able to see her face, find her earlier in the series - again just felt a bit contrived just to make the plot work without being earned. So made it an unsatisfying end to the series which is a shame. (That being said the emotional scene at the end felt like a great delivery of the two main casts' acting - just a shame it couldn't have been really hit home by the plot behind it being better to make it saisfying too).
